Introduction
For all the avid wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs out there, opening a wine bottle is an essential skill. It can be frustrating when you’re ready to unwind, relax and enjoy your favorite bottle of wine but cannot open it correctly. Difficulty in opening wine bottles often leads to broken corks, spilled wine, and possible injury. With a few easy steps, you can learn how to open a wine bottle like a pro, without breaking corks or injuring yourself. Read on for a step by step guide, expert tips, recommendations, troubleshooting, and information on wine culture and history.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Choose the right wine bottle and prepare it for opening
First, make sure that the wine bottle is at room temperature. Cold temperatures can make the cork harder to remove from the bottle. Also, wipe the wine bottle clean to avoid any dust, dirt or small impurities from entering the bottle.
Step 2: Choose the best tool for the job
Wine bottle openers come in different shapes and sizes. A corkscrew with a double-hinged lever is considered the standard. Other popular options include electric wine openers, waiter’s corkscrews, winged corkscrews, and pump bottle openers. Once you have your preferred opener, check to see that all of the parts are working correctly.
Step 3: Insert the corkscrew into the cork
Hold the bottle steady, then place the corkscrew at the center of the wine bottle’s corktop. Slowly twist the corkscrew to insert it fully into the cork. Be careful not to push it too hard to prevent it from penetrating the other side of the cork. Make sure that the screw is perfectly centered, or else the cork may break during the next phase.
Step 4: Twist and pull the cork out
When the corkscrew is in the cork, use the leverage of the handle to twist it back and forth gently until you can see about one full circle of the spirals. Next, pull on the cork’s sides to remove it slowly. There will be a slight resistance – which should give way – as you continue to pull the cork out of the bottle.
Step 5: Pour and enjoy the wine
When the cork is out, be careful when pouring the wine. Tilt the glass slightly to avoid spilling and pour the wine slowly into it, especially if you are dealing with an older wine that may have sediment build-up.
